Piano Games for Girls

Learning to play the piano can be frustrating and monotonous, but it does not have to be that way. You can make learning the piano more enjoyable for your student by incorporating some creative piano games into her lesson. She will look forward to her lesson times with you and to learning new things.
  1. Tic-Tac-Toe with Notes

    • This game helps you teach the student how to read the first eight treble clef notes on the staff and identify them on the piano. To begin, you will need to create a flashcard for each of the first eight treble clef notes and one flashcard that is a wild card. In the same room as the piano, you place the flashcards in a tic-tac-toe design on the floor. The student stands a short distance away from the flashcards and throws the bean bag, attempting to hit a flashcard.

When the bean bag lands on a flashcard, she names the note, turns over the flashcard and goes to the piano and plays the note. Your student plays the game until she has a tic-tac-toe on the board. When playing the game with more than one student, you can divide the students into teams. This game can also be used to teach the bass clef notes.

    Music Note Hide-and-Seek

    • This hide-and-seek game helps you teach the student the number of beats different musical notes receive. To begin, you need homemade tent cards. On the front of each tent card you draw a quarter note or half note, and on the inside of the tent card you draw dash marks to represent the number of beats for that particular note. Prior to the student arriving, you should place the cards around the room where they can be seen.

For the game, you will play the piano, during which time the student hunts and collects the cards relating to a specific note. When the music stops, the student shows you the number of cards she has collected. You will practice playing the notes together on the piano and holding each note for the correct number of beats.

Sit Down and Stand Up for Rests

    • This game helps you teach the student about rests. Before the game begins, you will need to place a chair close to the piano. Your student stands with her back to the seat of the chair, and you play a song on the piano. When the student hears the first rest in the music, she sits down on the chair. When she hears the second rest, she stands up. You can play the game for as long as the student is interested or until she recognizes a rest in the music.
