Sand Sculpture
Make sculptures out of sand. Build sand castles, skyscrapers, villages, replicas of animals, people and more. Bring sand shovels, buckets and small plastic toys such as a garden rake or spoons for detailing work. Make your sand creations away from the tide so they aren't washed away. Use buckets of water to wet the sand prior to molding so it will stick together better.
Beach Volleyball
Beach volleyball is a classic beach game. Form teams and have fun hitting the ball over the net. The basics of volleyball involve one team's serving the ball over the net from the back of the designated area; the other team then tries to hit the ball back over the net within the boundaries. The goal is to hit the ball over the net so that the other team either hits the ball out of bounds or allows it to touch the ground in bounds. Whether you keep score or not, you will get some exercise and have fun at the same time.
Beach Mini Golf
Create your own miniature golf course in the sand. Use the sand to create mounds for the holes, obstacles and trails. Use plastic golf clubs (such as those from a child's golf set) and plastic balls. Allow everyone to design one hole so each person has some input into creating the course. For an extra challenge, have someone add water to the obstacles as needed to make them more difficult to putt over.
Tug-of-War
Play beach tug-of-war. Dig a pit near the ocean so the tide can roll over the hole and fill it with water. Set up the rope so it is centered over the pit. Form two teams and have each team take a side of rope. Have the teams pull as hard as they can until one team is dragged forward into the water pit. Afterward, have fun washing off the sand by taking a dive or splashing around in the ocean.
Seashell Hunt
Challenge everyone to a seashell hunt. See who can collect the most seashells during a set amount of time. Or ask everyone to find a specific kind of seashell, such as a conch shell or all white seashells. Only whole seashells count. Challenge participants to only use their toes---no hands at all---to gather the seashells.
