Printable Winter Activities for Children

With short days and cold weather, the winter months can be an uneventful and boring time for children, as they are often confined to the indoors. If your children are suffering from a case of the winter dull-drums, turn to the Internet as a resource to locate entertaining winter-themed activities for your children to complete.

Toilet Paper Tube Snowman
- This snowman craft project comes from the website DLTK-holidays.com. Print out the snowman template from the website and distribute it--as well as scissors, a toilet paper tube, glue, a cup from an egg carton, black and white paints, and crayons--to your children. Have the children paint the egg carton cup black (this will serve as the hat for the snowman) and the toilet paper tube white. While the egg carton cup and the toilet paper tube are drying, instruct children to color in the snowman template and cut it out. When the toilet paper tube and egg carton cup have dried, have children glue the snowman template onto the tube--horizontally--and glue the egg carton cup onto the top of the tube.
Winter Word Jumble
- Provide children with an opportunity to exercise their minds with this winter word jumble, provided by the educational website apple4theteacher.com. Simply visit the website and print out the word jumble, which features 20 winter-themed words with the letters printed in a mixed-up order. Children try to rearrange the letters, creating words that are spelled appropriately. Not only does this activity stimulate their minds, but it also promotes spelling and vocabulary development.
Winter Bingo
- The website makingfriends.com provides a printable game of winter bingo to occupy children's time. Load your printer with a supply of cardstock, as printing the game on cardstock will make it more durable. Go to the website and print out the game. Make sure to print out enough copies for each player--there are 12 variations of the game to choose from. Also be sure to print out a calling card. Distribute Bingo cards to children, as well as pennies, buttons, markers, Bingo chips or any other object that can be used to mark the pictures on the card when they are called. Use the calling card to call out winter pictures. As you call out the name of a winter object, children search their cards and mark the object you called out if it is featured on their card. The first player to completely mark a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line wins the game.
