Human Pizza
Prepare for this game from librarian RoseMary Honnold's website by first writing down on individual slips of paper some popular pizza ingredients, such as dough, pepperoni and cheese. Create enough like sets so there is one item per person. Hand out the slips of paper and tell everyone to quickly form groups so that each "pizza" has only one of each ingredient. Players interact with one another to figure out whether their ingredient is needed for a group. Reward the first group to complete the pizza.
Word Chain
Play this simple icebreaker by first gathering all of the players around a table or common area. Assign a category, then pick a player to recite a word that fits that category. For instance, for the "teamwork," the player can say "cooperation." The player sitting to the left of the first player then has to recite the first player's word and add another suitable word. Continue around the table, with each player reciting the preceding words and then adding another to the list. Anyone who forgets a word is eliminated. The last player left wins the game.
Knots
If you want to encourage problem solving, try this game from Learning for Life. Start by gathering everyone in a standing circle. Tell all the players to place their left arm out into the circle and then grasp another person's hand, excluding adjacent people. Then have them do the same with their right arms. Once all of the players are completely tangled up, instruct them to work together to get out of the "knot" without letting go of anyone's hand. To make this game competitive, divide the players into two teams and see which group can complete this task faster.
