Adult Memory Games

We all have the ability to remember things, whether for the short term---a few minutes at the most---or long term, where something can stay with you for the rest of your life. As you age, the ability to remember things tends to diminish. You can help slow the process by exercising your brain, much as with a muscle, thereby increasing its natural abilities. Memory games are one good tool to help your brain.
  1. Click the Colour

    • Play a fun game that really gives your brain a workout. The names of different colors are displayed, but the color of the letters is different that the printed word. You need to pay close attention and click the actual color of the word, not what color the word says. For example, the printed word might read "blue," but the text is red. You would click "Red" at the bottom of the screen. Miss it and you fail, but get it right and you can continue through multiple levels as you struggle to remember what you need to click while the words and colors come faster and faster. Test your abilities against friends and family, or post it to the web site to see how you compare with other players. Follow the link below to try it.

    Concentration

    • If you prefer a game that is not played on the computer, lay cards out in rows, facedown. Try to find pairs by turning over any two cards, removing them if they match or turning them facedown again if they don't. Kids and adults alike can play this game. If you want more of a challenge, use two decks instead of one. When using two decks, match both the card and the suit---such as finding the three of spades from each deck---to give your memory a real workout.

The online version of this game is similar to the card game. It is played by matching images in a race to beat the clock. This game is laid out in a fashion similar to that of the concentration card game described above. In this case, however, you see quirky drawings of some odd little characters at work and at play. Click two cards to reveal the pictures. If they match, they will remain face up. If they do not match, the pictures will disappear when you click on another choice. Continue clicking pairs of cards until you have matched all of the characters. Keep an eye on the clock at the bottom of the window, because if you run out of time, you lose and have to begin again.

    Simon

    • Simon is a hand-held game that requires you to pay close attention as a pattern of lights and sounds are displayed. You must then repeat them exactly. At first it seems easy, but as the speed and complexity increases, watch out! If you miss, the game is over. If you get it right, though, the game will continue to challenge your memory with more and more complex patterns of lights and sounds. Although kids can play this game, it is also excellent for adults. You can buy Simon at a toy store or online.

There is also a Flash version of Simon. This online game displays a picture of the real game, and uses the same lights and sounds to challenge your memory. Only experts might notice a difference in the game play, as the virtual Simon does not have as many levels as the hand-held game does.
