How to Build a Ladder Ball Spin-It Game

Ladder ball is a backyard recreational game that goes by any number of names, including ladder toss, ladder golf and bolo toss. Whatever you call it, the equipment needed for the sport is simple: two goals consisting of PVC "ladders" with 3 rungs each, and six bolos (three each in two different colors). Most do-it-yourselfers can build one with a modest inventory of supplies and power and hand tools.

Things You'll Need

  • 50 feet 1-inch PVC pipe
  • 12 1-inch T-fittings
  • 12 1-inch right angle fittings
  • 12 golf balls, 6 each of two different colors
  • 10 feet 1/2-inch nylon rope
  • Saw or PVC cutter
  • Power drill

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 14 pieces of 1-inch PVC pipe to 24-inch lengths. Cut an additional 16 pieces of the 1-inch PVC pipe to 12-inch lengths. Make cuts using a PVC cutter, hacksaw, crosscut hand saw, circular saw or jigsaw. Use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges of the cuts.

    • 2

Build a base for each of two goals. For each of the two sides of each base, fit a 24-inch piece of PVC pipe to one end of a T-fitting and a 12-inch piece to the other. Place a right angle fitting on each end of the side base pieces. Fit a 24-inch piece into the right angle fittings to create a rectangular base with a fitting pointing straight up on each side.

On each base, fit a 12-inch piece into the T-fitting on each side. Fit a T-fitting to each of these pieces and put a 24-inch crossbar between the sides. Fit another 12-inch piece into the T-fitting, then add another T-fitting and another 24-inch crossbar. Place another 12-inch piece of PVC into the T-fitting and top it with a right angle fitting and a final 24-inch crossbar.

Drill a 1/2-inch hole through each of 12 golf balls, and cut six 18-inch pieces of 1/2-inch nylon rope. Feed each end of each nylon rope piece through the hole in a golf ball, so that both balls on each rope are the same color. Tie knots on both sides of each golf ball (one at the end of the rope and another on the other side of the golf ball) to prevent them from sliding on the rope.
