Outdoor Leadership Games

There are many types of organizations which hold field days or retreats where people participate in leadership games. Whether these are high schools, church based groups, or private or public corporations, leadership games and team building can bring members of a group closer together, while inspiring confidence in their abilities as an individual and as part of a team.
  1. Mine Field

    • In an outdoor space, various obstacles such as crates, boxes, garbage bags are placed on the ground. People pair off, with one person putting on a blindfold. Once the game starts, the blindfolded person must cross from one end of the "mine field" to the other without bumping into any objects in their way. They will be guided by the voice of the person who is not blindfolded. If they bump into an object they must begin again. To avoid letting players see where they are in relation to mines, you can either blindfold them before they reach the mine field, or spin the person who will be walking through the mine field around three times before they start. You can then change the location of the obstacles and switch partners. This task focuses on the trust amongst co-workers as well as the leadership one must practice to get their partner safely to the other side.

    Blindfolded Polygon

    • The group is divided into groups of three, four or five. (The more players, the more challenging the leadership exercise.) Each team assigns one leader. The rest of the team members get blindfolded. The team leader hands the rest of their team a rope which is several feet long. When the game begins the leader calls out different shapes, such as circles, triangles and squares, which the rest team must make while blindfolded. The leader can use their voice to direct players to where they need to position the rope in order to complete the shape. The team who completes the most shapes in a pre-determined amount of time is considered the winner. The teams can then choose new leaders so everyone takes a turn. This challenge focuses on a leader instructing co-workers in a task.

    Great Egg Drop

    • Teams are sectioned off into groups of three, four or five. The team must design a package which will safely protect an egg when it is dropped from ten feet for the lowest possible cost. Amongst the group, a leader must be chosen who oversees the construction of the product as well as gives a presentation as to why their egg packaging is the best. The team which gives the best presentation, as well as creates the best packaging which protects the egg, for the lowest material cost, is the winner.

    4 x 4 Treasure Hunt

    • For this exercise people split into pairs. Each pair must have a 4 x 4 off road all-terrain vehicle (ATV) available to them (golf carts can be substituted, if this game is laid out on a golf course.) One person is blindfolded, while the other is not. As the game starts, the person who is not blindfolded must give directions to the blindfolded driver of where to drive to find the first clue on the treasure hunt. Once they reach the first treasure clue, the players switch responsibilities. The players continue finding clues until one team crosses the finish line and finds the treasure. This challenge allows both players to lead each other along the way of the treasure hunt.
