Good Games to Play With Groups

If you host a party and you have invited many people who don't know each other, group games are the best way to put them at ease. Games allow you to be relaxed and silly and not to worry about what other people might think of you. They provide a level platform where everyone can have fun without feeling exposed or awkward. After a round of games, even former strangers will be well on their way to becoming friends.
  1. Charades

    • This much-loved classic will break the ice in no time. Prepare a few slips of paper with film titles or other well known expressions. Put them into a hat and let the players draw one after the other. One player mimes the expression on the paper and the others guess what it is. Whoever guesses right is the next one up to mime.

    Wordball

    • This game will make you gasp as well laugh out loud. All the players stand in a circle. One person starts saying a random word and making a ball-throwing gesture to any other person. (If you like, you could use a real ball. Watch out for your china, then.) The player who "catches the ball" repeats the word and says the first thing that comes into her head, passing it on to the next player, and so on. This game is widely used as a warm-up exercise in improvised comedy. You'll be amazed what pops into people's heads.

    Bippety-Bippety-Bop

    • All players form a circle. One is in the middle and tries to get out. To achieve this, he has an arsenal of "weapons." One is to say "bippety-bippety-bop" to any of the members in the circle. To stay in the circle, the target needs to say "bop" before the middle player has finished his words. If the "bop" comes too late, the players change places. The middle player could also say "bop" to anyone in the circle, who needs to stay silent in this case. If he makes a sound, the players change places. Finally, the middle player can point at a person in the circle, say "elephant" and count to 10. The player who has been directly pointed out needs to cross his arms and pinch his nose with one hand, forming a "trunk." The players to his left and right form "ears" by turning toward him and forming semicircles with their arms. If any of the three people involved are not in position when the pointer has finished counting to 10, the late one goes to the middle. This game promotes flexibility and concentration.

    Freeze Tag

    • Two players start miming anything that comes into their mind. They continue until the next player shouts "freeze." They keep their position until the next player touches the one he wishes to replace. He then has to take up exactly the same position, before the new players continue miming until the next one shouts "freeze," and so on. Most people enjoy "freezing" their friends when they are in really awkward positions.
