Inside Winter Games

The winter months often force kids and adults alike to stay in the house because of inclement weather. There are, however, many ideas for constructive and fun indoor activities that all age groups can participate in. Indoor games vary from the silly to the mentally stimulating, so there's something for everyone, no matter what their interests might be.
  1. Clothes Exchange

    • This game is great for winter when everyone is wearing layers. Split the groups up into pairs or couples if playing with adults; the first pair to completely exchange their top layer of clothes wins the round.

For clothing layers ideas think sweat pants, men's button ups, old sweaters, scarves, hats and ties. This way everyone stays in most of their clothes and a silliness factor is added that kids and adults will love.

If you're dealing with a lot of children, and some of them are short on layers, lend them some of your older clothes and accessories for this game.

Play as many rounds as desired or set a goal number for most rounds won, then declare the appropriate team the winner.

    Winter Word Bingo

    • Bingo is a classic indoor game that is easy to modify to fit any season or theme such as winter-word bingo. This game can also be stored in a shoebox and saved until the next year if desired.

You'll need blue card-stock paper cut in half and make into cards. Use winter words, such as snow, Frosty and ice. Make a word bank and write the words on flash cards; you can laminate the flash cards for extended use.

Draw snowmen and snowflakes on the card stock with a white crayon or colored pencil for added decoration. The game is played exactly like regular bingo except with a winter-word theme.

    Snowball Pass

    • You'll need a bag of cotton balls, enough plastic straws for everyone, and a few "snow forts." The kids can design their snow forts as teams using found items such as egg cartons, shoe boxes and legos.

Give each team an equal amount of cotton balls. They will then use the straws with their mouths to vacuum up the cotton balls and pass them to each other--no hands allowed. The team that gets all of its snowballs to the fort wins.

    Winter Pictionary

    • Try a game of Pictionary with a winter theme for adults or children. Start out with easy drawing topics such as scarves, mittens and snow angels. Be creative but don't make it too difficult, especially if working with children.

For an adult version of the game, use ideas from classic movies such as the pink bunny suit from "A Christmas Story" or add a blindfold for the "artist" to make easy winter pictures more difficult to draw. The results will be sure to provide laughs all around.
