Children's Recreation Games

Finding fun games for children to play outside is important in an age where many children run to their video and computer games for playtime. Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining healthy bodies, which often carry over into being a healthy adult. Recreational games force children to play outside in an organized manner, work together and interact with others as opposed to staring at a screen and holding a controller in their hands.
  1. Four Square

    • Four square tests reflexes and ball-handling skills, so children need to be comfortable with a ball to play this game. All you need to play four square is a medium-sized ball that bounces---such as a kickball or basketball---chalk and a paved level surface. Create the playing field by drawing a 6 x 6 feet square and dividing it to create four equal squares. Mark the squares 1 through 4---4 being the lowest square and 1 the highest. The server is in square 1. The server bounces the ball once in his square and then hits it into another square where it may bounce one time before the player must hit it. If the ball bounces twice in a single square that player is out and if a player hits the ball outside the play area the player who hit it is automatically out. When a player is out, rotate players so the lowest square is empty or if there are more players, allow one to fill the fourth square. When there are fewer than four people left, the unoccupied squares become out of bounds. The last person left in the game wins.

    Capture the Flag

    • Capture the flag is a fun, active game to play with a large group of any age, but can be played with a smaller group as long the teams are even. There are many capture the flag variations, but all that's needed to play are two flags---or objects to represent flags---a large area, and enough people to create two teams. A football field works, though an area with varying terrains makes the game more interesting because there are places to hide. To play, divide the play area into two equally sized spaces, creating a neutral area between, and divide players into two equal teams. Each team hides their flag and designates a "jail" for players who cross into the enemy team's territory and are tagged by opposing team members. Players can be freed from jail if a teammate who has not been caught tags them. The team that finds the opponent's flag and brings it to their side first wins.

    Disc Golf

    • Disc golf, often played recreationally with a frisbee, is similar to club golf except instead of hitting a ball towards a hole you are throwing a disc towards a basket. The rules are similar as well, for example, the player farthest from the hole always throws first, and players should be respectful of each other by taking turns and never throwing a disc until everyone is safely out of the way. While many disc golf courses cater to adult players, create a course for children by marking the "hole" numbers and placing large baskets at the end of each hole. This game allows children to have fun while learning a skill and practicing fair play.
