Gladiator-Castle Wars
Gladiator--Castle Wars is a flash based game where players try their skills in the arena against simulated computer opponents. The game's only plot is about a warrior who must battle opponents, upgrade his weapons and occasionally get his hair cut. Though the game's controls are fairly simple---there are only three buttons and the movement keys---it does offer a save feature so players don't have to start all over when they lose. Players battle opponents and collect treasure, though this game is rather small---players are confined to two screens.
Shadow of Rome
Shadow of Rome was released by Capcom for the Playstation 2 console. The game follows Agrippa and Octavianus, two characters caught up in the aftermath of Caesar's assassination. Players follow both characters while Agrippa battles in the arena as a gladiator to help stay his father's execution. After he is blamed for Caesar's death, Octavianus must sneak around to gain clues about the murder. Though not exactly historically accurate, it does make for a fine plot dependent on swords and stealth.
Colosseum: Road to Rome
Colosseum: Road to Rome, for the Playstation 2, is another game to follow the success of and popularity of Rome in 2005. Unlike previous Roman games for the Playstation, Road to Rome allows players to create their own character to battle within the Colosseum in an RPG style fighting engine that allows players to upgrade their character's abilities. Though the game has a fairly complex fighting engine, allowing players to focus attacks on specific regions on their opponent, it doesn't encompass multiple opponents.
Sword of Rome
Sword of Rome is a turn based game published by GMT games, created by Wray Ferell with artist Roger B. MacGowen. The game is a card-driven board game using the popular base system invented by Mark Herman playable with up to four players. The game focuses on historic Rome, concentrating on the vicious struggles of the people of Italy and Sicily during 4th and 3rd Centuries BC. The goal of the game is to dominate the western Mediterranean and gain control of the known world. With an optional fifth member expansion pack and map to track each player's progress and accommodate an additional player, Sword of Rome is less complex than many turn based board games, making it appropriate for players 12 and up. Games can last several hours.
