How to Build a Three-Hole Washer Toss Game

Whether you call it a three-hole washer toss game or one of its other monikers, like Texas or hillbilly horseshoes, it’s an entertaining way to pass time. Players try to toss a metal washer into holes in a game board in order to score points. Since the only parts to the game are the washers and the boards, you can create it in under an hour with some cutting and fastening.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pieces of lumber, 2 inches by 4 inches
  • Sheet of plywood
  • Saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Drill
  • 1 1/2-inch decking screws
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • String
  • 6 steel washers, 2 1/2 inches

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the two inch by four inch lumber into four boards, three feet long, and four boards, 15 inches long. Cut the plywood into two sheets that are three feet by one and one-half feet.

    • 2

Place two of the three-foot long boards on the table or ground, sitting on their edges. Place two of the 15 inch boards in between the longer boards, one at the top and one at the bottom. Screw the boards into place using two screws at each corner. Do this again to make the frame for the other game board.

    • 3

Make a three-foot long line down the middle of each sheet of plywood. Ensure that the line is in the exact middle. Measure down the line and place a mark at eight inches, 18 inches and 28 inches. These marks will become the center of your circles.

    • 4

Tie a string around a pencil so that it will be one and one-half inches from the other end of the string. Place that end of the string on one of the marks and hold it there with your finger. Use the pencil to create a circle around the mark. Do this for all three of the marks on each of the boards.

    • 5

Use a jigsaw, or a three-inch hole cutter bit and your drill, to create holes where the circles are on the pieces of plywood.

    • 6

Place the plywood on top of the frame and connect it using decking screws. Drill a screw every three or four inches around the outside of the structure. Repeat with the other game board.

    • 7

Place the game boards ten feet apart and then grab six steel washers, two and one-half inches, and a friend to play the game.
