Video games have changed a lot over the past 30 years. The graphics are realistic, putting you in the middle of the action. Gaming systems appropriate for preteens include the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the Wii system. The PS3 and Xbox have built-in WiFi and the games are extremely realistic. Games for 10-to-12-year-olds include Sonic the Hedgehog and EyePet. Be sure to check the game's rating before you purchase it for your child. For children ages 10 to 12, the game should be rated E for everyone.
Handheld Video Games
Handheld video-game systems allow your children to take their entertainment with them. Games that are made for the console systems like PlayStation and Xbox are usually also made into handheld versions. Handheld systems include the PSP and the Nintendo DS. You can find many handheld games that are geared towards preteens, including Nintendogs and Guitar Hero. Games for these systems also include a rating system.
Board Games
Many classic board games are available for children ages 10 to 12. They allow interaction with one another without the use of television or technology and are great for sleepovers, camping and when the power goes out. Monopoly is a popular board game that teaches children about money. There are numerous versions of Monopoly, including Monopoly City and Monopoly Here &Now: The World Edition. Other board games that preteens can enjoy are chess, checkers, Clue and Life. They can teach skill and concentration as well as cooperation and good sportsmanship.
