Portable Bean Bag Games

Summer is a time for picnics. Besides eating more food than would normally be advisable, it's also a time to play games. Bean bag games can be played by people of all ages and don't require a great deal of set up. For the most part, all that's needed are a few bean bags and a wooden board with one or more holes in it. Bought or created on your own, bean bag games are a picnic staple. Pack up your bean bags and play these portable games.
  1. Cornhole

    • Cornhole is the oldest version of a bean bag toss game. It's extremely portable, as its only set-up is propping a board up on its legs. The object of the game is to toss bean bags into a hole on the opposite team's board, which stands 33 feet away. Adult players stand at the side of their board while younger players are allowed to stand closer (21 feet away from the opposite board). Each team has 4 bean bags, and only once they've tossed all of the bean bags is it the other team's turn. A bean bag that goes into the hole is valued at 3 points while one landing anywhere on the board (without first touching the ground) has a value of 1 point. Zero points are awarded if the bean bag lands on the ground. The game goes on as long as is necessary for one of the teams to reach 21 points. Different versions of this game are available for purchase and are sized specifically for tailgating.

    Bean Bag Darts

    • On a 3-by-3-foot piece of plywood, draw an oversized dart board with bands big enough to cut a circle that a bean bag can fit through. Once all if the holes are cut, the board can be painted to look like a dart board with the point values--50 points for the bullseye and decreasing outwards--painted next to each hole. After leaning the board against a tree or picnic table, the object of the game is similar to that of darts where each player tosses three bean bags per turn. As long as each player receives an equal number of turns, the game can go on for as long as you want. The winner is the person with the highest score. This is a game that can fit into the trunk of your car (laid flat it takes up very little room) and be taken to a picnic or on a camping trip.

    Bean Bag Lawn Darts

    • A bean bag game that can be taken on any car trip and be used to entertain kids and adults alike at pit stops is lawn darts. Played the same way as traditional lawn darts, this version of the game is played with bean bag-tipped darts instead of the heavy plastic ones. The three different sized rings are scattered about an open area and, depending on age, players stand at a distance from the largest (and usually closest) ring. With very little set-up and no extended rules of play, this game can be played when only a short amount of time is available.
