Fun Relay Games for Older Kids

Relay games teach kids the importance of teamwork and encouraging others. Players can't succeed as a whole unless they work together towards a common goal. Relay games for older kids should include the elements of fun and challenge to keep the players interested and engaged.
  1. Frosting Signature

    • Set up tables covered with wax paper. Fill pastry bags with frosting and place them on the table. Line up relay teams at the opposite end of the room or area from the tables. Each relay team member will run down to the table, pick up a pastry bag, write his first name on the wax paper, put the pastry bag down, run back and tag the next team member, who then does the same. The first team to finish wins. Options for lengthening the game include requiring participants to write their first and last names or having each player fill a new pastry bag with frosting each time.

    Pass the Pretzels

    • Divide the kids into relay teams. Give each participant a stick pretzel and instruct the players to insert one end in her mouth. Place a twisted pretzel on the end of the the first team member's stick pretzel in each relay team. When the clock starts, the first team member turns to the second player in line and places the twisted pretzel onto his stick pretzel without using her hands. The second player turns to the third player and repeats until the pretzel reaches the last player in line. The team to finish first wins the relay.

    Water Relay

    • Divide players into even teams. Designate a starting and finish line, 25 feet apart, with chalk or tape. Place a bowl full of water at the starting line and an empty bowl at the finish line for each team. Give each team a paper cup. Each team member must fill his paper cup with water from the bowl, run down to the finish line and pour the water in the bowl at the finish line. Then he must run back to the team and pass the paper cup to the next player. The object is to accomplish the task quickly with minimal spills. The first team to transfer all the water from the starting line to the finish line wins. If it's a tie, the team that has the most water in the bowl wins.

    Suitcase Relay

    • Fill suitcases for each relay team with the same number of hats, pieces of clothing and shoes. Require each team member to open the suitcase and put on an outfit over her clothes including a hat, a shirt, pants and shoes. Make it more challenging by including a belt or suspenders. Once the team member is fully dressed, she must remove the clothing and place it back into the suitcase for the next player. The first team to finish wins.

    Mystery Food

    • Divide players into even teams. Place a paper sack filled with small, edible objects wrapped individually in aluminum foil at the end of the room or playing area. Include some foods that may not be appealing to the kids such as raw chopped onions or broccoli. Each team member must run over to the paper bag, pull an item out of the sack, unwrap and eat it before returning to the team to allow the next player to take her turn. The team that eats all the food items and empties the sack first wins. Ask if anyone has food allergies before beginning for safety. Make sure the foods you put in the bags are small easy to chew.
