How to Set Up Horseshoes

Horseshoes is a classic game that's easy to learn but difficult to master. The setup is fairly simple, not unlike the game itself, and requires just a few items. In a pinch, you can use substitutes for some of the essentials. A handful of parks across the country have horseshoe courts already set up, but some avid players build a court in their backyards so that they can play and practice any time they wish.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 stakes
  • Mallet

Instructions

    • 1

Select a playing areat. Since you'll be installing stakes, the court should be located on your own property; if not, you'll need to get the consent of the owner before starting your court. Ideally, the area you choose will be long and flat with no shrubs or trees.

    • 2

Install the first stake by hammering it into the ground with your mallet.

    • 3

Measure off 40 feet and hammer the second stake into the ground. If you do not have a measuring tape, you can approximate the distance by taking 40 steps, placing one foot directly in front of the other.

    • 4

Get rid of any debris between the two stakes, as well as within a four-foot radius of each stake. This will prevent interference while also making it easier to retrieve the horseshoes after you've thrown them.
