Fun Basketball Games for Youth

Keep the game of basketball about having fun by incorporating some games into your coaching practice, or just head out to the driveway to play with your kids. Classic games may not be as common as they once were. Teach children how to play the outdoor games that you enjoyed as a child, then try out some computer games to try something different.
  1. Firing Squad

    • Every player needs their own basketball to play Firing Squad. The idea is to be the first person to make it through a series of seven spots on the court. Start by marking off seven shooting points in a half circle in front of the basket. The first one should be at the side of the basket, and the fourth spot should be at the free-throw line. Everyone starts at the first spot. They all shoot at the same time and keep rebounding their own ball and shooting until they make the shot and can advance to the next spot on the court. The winner is the player who makes a basket at the seventh spot on the court first.

    Horse

    • Try the classic game of Horse. You will need a basketball, a hoop and two or more players. Start by choosing the order of the players with a free-throw contest. Then, the first player shoots from anywhere on the court, while calling the moves involved. Kids often like to create fancy shots to keep it fun, such as calling, "two spins, a hop and he shoots," or "left-hand hook shot off the backboard." If he makes a basket, then the next player has to duplicate the moves from the same spot on the court. If this player misses, he receives the letter "H." Then the next player gets to come up with a shot, and so on until someone loses by gaining all five letters. Any word can be used in place of Horse. Pig is another common choice.

    Five Shots--Five Points

    • Five Shots can be played with young players. Line up the kids at the free-throw line and instruct the first player to shoot the ball. If he misses, he must rebound the ball and shoot from where he retrieved it. This continues until he makes a basket or has had five tries. If the first player made a basket on the third shot, then the second player has to make one before his third try. If he can&'t, he gains a point for each missed basket up to his fifth try. Players try to keep their score under five points.

    Online Basketball Games

    • Continue playing basketball inside with one of the many free online games available through websites like Funschool, ESPN and Onlinegames.com. Play point-and-shoot games or try your hand at a live one-on-one online game. MyBaller.com offers an online basketball role-playing game. While playing the game of basketball, you accumulate points to increase your player&'s stats. The points can be used to purchase virtual items for your player or change his height, weight, jumping ability, shooting skills and overall quickness.
