Teenage Gym Games

As young children become adolescents, many of the games they played in grade school gym class may seem childish or boring to them. Games such as "Tag" or "Red Rover" may not be challenging enough for them. Yet many teachers and youth group organizers promote many competitive games teenagers can play within in the confines of a gymnasium without feeling too childish.
  1. Horse

    • This is a basketball game in which at least two players take turns attempting to make creative or challenging shots. Once a player makes a shot, every other player must complete the same shot. If a player misses the shot, he receives a letter. When a player misses enough shots to complete the word "Horse" he is eliminated from the game. The last player standing or with the least amount of letters is the winner.

    Dodge Ball

    • This classic gym game is often played throughout high school. Players are split into two teams. Each team commandeers one half of the gymnasium. Players from each team throw soft rubber or foam balls at members of the opposite team to strike them with the ball. When a player is hit, he is out. If a player catches a ball, the player who threw it is out. An eliminated player may re-enter the game when a player on his team catches a ball. The first team to eliminate all the other teams&' players wins.

    Around the World

    • In this game, players designate specific areas to take shots around a basketball court. Once a player makes the shot, she advances to the next area. Each player gets two chances per turn to make a shot. If the player misses the first attempt, she can stop and wait until the next round to shoot or take a second attempt at making the shot. If the player misses on the second attempt she must return to the first shot area. The first player to complete all the shots wins.

    Beach Ball Basketball

    • Beach balls tend to pop. Have extras on hand.

This gym game will require about four or five beach balls. Divide your players into two teams. Teams must be even, but there is no player limit. Players from each team are seated at random throughout the court. Each player is given a plastic toy bat that players use to hit the beach balls and move them across the court to their team&'s basket. The ball cannot be thrown, kicked or picked up. Teams earn one point by hitting the net or backboard and two points for hitting the rim. Typically, the first team to make 21 points wins.
