Colonial Circle
The entire class can play Colonial Circle inside or outdoors. You need an open space large enough to accommodate all participants. To begin, have all players stand hand in hand and envision a campfire. One person is the "British Spy." It&'s important that all players hold hands for the entire game. Next, the spy stands outside the circle and asks, "Please good people, let me in so I can warm my toes and light my pipe." The group allows the spy to enter, and he moves to the center of the circle mimicking the stated movements. While doing the actions, the spy searches the circle for a weak link and bolts up and attempts to flee and break through the players&' arms. If captured, he nominates a new spy and waits in the center. If successfully breaking through, he selects a new spy and then re-enters the circle with him, plotting another escape. Colonial Circle is particularly fun for a themed class party or to celebrate a holiday recognized for educational value, like Columbus Day.
Frustrated Orange
Frustrated Orange is a challenging and entertaining game that you can play with all students in a single group, or you can break up participants into eight-person teams. Whichever way the class decides, each team gets a bucket or plastic bowl or tub, a large orange and a quarter. Fill all tubs with three-quarters of the way with water, and place the orange in the center. The goal is for each teammate to approach the tub and attempt to place the quarter on the orange and balance it there for at least 10 seconds. This game works well at class parties because it maintains educational qualities promoting rational thinking and reasoning skills but also enables students to have fun while learning and relaxing.
Blindfolded Shoe Shuffle
Blindfolded Shoe Shuffle is a fun, active game that the entire class can enjoy playing at the same time. It can also be played indoors or outside. Before beginning, clear a space large enough for all participants to stand in a circle. Hand out a blindfold to each player. Bandannas, men&'s ties, clean tube socks or lightweight kitchen dish towels all work as options. The game requires one referee. To start, all players take off their shoes and toss them in the center of the circle. Once everyone is shoeless and blindfolded, the referee mixes up the pile of shoes then shouts "Go!" All players wander to the center of the circle in search of their shoes. The goal of this game is to claim your own shoes, put them on and find your way back to your original space in the circle first. This fun game enables friendly competition between peers while letting them be silly and physical at a relaxed class party.
