Cool Games to Play at a Sleepover

There&'s much more to a sleepover than watching movies while eating popcorn, playing video games, or for the girls, applying makeup. A myriad of different games help keep the party going, while allowing a chance for children to bond. Planning ahead keeps the creativity flowing.
  1. Scavenger Hunt with a Twist

    • Upload the photos for the guests to view.

Update classic games with a new spin to keep children entertained. Instead of a normal scavenger hunt, give each group of children a digital camera or video recorder. Have them find objects or take photos of themselves in odd places. For example, if there is a playground near the party, have the children take a photo of themselves with six children on one swing. Then, have them make a human pyramid before running off to find other items on the list. If the weather turns sour, have a backup list of items and things they can find in the home or party location venue to take photos.

    Themed Slumber Party Games

    • Making themed costumes can be part of the games.

If throwing a themed slumber party, let the theme of the party dictate the games played. For instance, if a child requests a Harry Potter theme, have a costume contest where the children create their own wizard hats and dress robes out of old sheets and scraps. If little thespians wish to display creative talent, play the paper bag skit game as recommended by the website Kaboose. Before the party, the host drops six to eight unrelated items into a paper bag. The children then act out a short skit using at least four of the items.

    Scary Slumber Party Games

    • Pair teens up to apply scary makeup to set the mood.

For the teen crowd, playing scary slumber party games is a possibility, depending on the maturity level of the guests. Scary story contests held in the backyard with only flashlights sets the tone. Party goers might also make use of a Ouija Board, or make up scary stories regarding the deaths of the other children as they play Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board. Finally, according to the American Folklore website, having the children say "Bloody Mary" three times in front of a mirror after telling the story of Bloody Mary, but changing the dialog to include local places and folklore scares teens for weeks after the party.
