Games for Outside Picnics

Outdoor picnics are an opportunity to enjoy food, socialization and games with friends while escaping the confines of the indoors. Games at picnics can be competitive or social in nature. They can be organized to be played by teams, or for individuals to play against each other. Some games might display the athletic abilities of your picnic attendees, while others will show the use of logic.
  1. Scavenger Hunt

    • Create a scavenger hunt list for an outside picnic that is not only entertaining, but helps clean up the picnic area. Include items such as empty soda bottles and cans of different brands. Award bonus points if one team finds more than five different brands. Include items such as paper bags, plastic bags, candy wrappers or containers from fast food restaurants. Other items for the scavenger hunt can include discarded foam coolers or cups. Give each team a list of items to look for, along with the point value for each item. Give the teams 30 to 45 minutes to complete the hunt and return for scoring, with the highest scoring team getting to eat first.

    Tossing Games

    • Several tossing games are suitable for playing outside. One of the traditional versions is horseshoes, but this can damage the ground if the area does not already have a horseshoe pit set up. Instead, play a game of washer toss or beanbag toss. Commercially produced versions of these games are available. Some have you attempt to toss beanbags or metal washers into multiple holes on a target board. Other variations have just one hole and use a scoring system similar to horseshoes, where getting a beanbag or washer in the hole is worth three points and close to it is worth one. Bocce ball is another game that involves tossing toward a target. Players compete to get their own balls to roll closest to the target ball.

    Relay Race

    • Divide your guests into teams and have them perform a relay race. Create different activities during the race. The first one could involve each team's players forming a line, standing 10 feet apart. To start the race, players toss a water balloon from person to person, starting at the end of the line. If it breaks, they must start over. Upon getting the balloon, the first person in line then might need to run and bring back a banana to the next person in line. The second person then runs to a table to get a water gun, but must keep the banana under her chin; dropping it means going back to the starting line with her team. The third person might have to use the water gun to hit a target. Create enough activities so each person on the team has a task to help the team win. Each team member can't start his task until the person before him finishes.

    Outdoor Sports

    • There are several different sports you can play at your outdoor picnic. One is organizing your guests into at least two teams to play softball. If there are more teams, play it as a tournament with the winning teams competing against each other. This can also be done with volleyball, basketball and football.
