Adult Summer Games

As the heat of summer descends upon the routines of daily life, people change their lifestyles. In particular, people seek out different leisure activities. The hot weather brings a variety of pleasures and punishments, making a strong case for outdoor fun and games to those who enjoy the bright summer skies, and an equally strong case for cooler pastimes to those who wilt under the sweltering temperatures of the nation&'s hottest places.
  1. Eating Contest

    • The major league of competitive eating is not for the faint of heart, but at an amateur level you and your friends can have a lot of fun stuffing yourselves silly in a contest to see who can eat the most of whichever stereotypical summertime food is on hand, be it hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad, fried chicken, key lime pie, or whatever else. Eating contests have a certain American flair to them; we&'re a nation of big eaters, and it&'s fun to make games out of what we already know.

    Boat Competitions

    • Kayaks, canoes, catamarans, motorboats, jet skis, inflatable rafts, yachts...if they float, you can compete in them. The summer is great for many water sports that are too cold to enjoy during the rest of the year. You could race boats to see who can go the fastest. You could perform maneuvers to see who has the best technique and skill. You could even simply putter around in a competition to see who can have the best time out on the water. If you don&'t own any boats, look around town and find some for rent or hire.

    Ultimate Frisbee

    • This is a perennial favorite on college campuses. Ultimate---it isn&'t officially called "Ultimate Frisbee" since the word "Frisbee" is a trademark---is a formal sport with established national and international rules of play and competitive competitions. Most people who play, however, are only in it for the fun, and might not stick very closely to the official rules.

Ultimate takes place on a level playing field split into three sections: two end zones, and a main area of play. The game begins with each team in its respective end zone. The defensive team throws the disc across the field to the other team, like a football kickoff. The offensive team members then pass the disc between one another in an attempt to complete a pass in the other team&'s end zone, which scores them a point. Players are not allowed to move while holding the disc, and they can only hold it for ten seconds. The other team will try to intercept the disc as well as disrupt the passes of the offensive team. Unlike football, game play isn&'t divided into separate plays, but flows continuously until someone calls a foul, calls a time out, or scores a point.
