Rules for the Game of Marco Polo

Marco Polo is a swimming pool game of tag. The game got its name from a Venetian explorer named Marco Polo, who helped discover parts of Asia in the late 13th century. The game’s popularity comes from its ease and the ability to play with a pool full of friends or just one sibling.
  1. Number and Age of Players

    • Marco Polo can be played with as little as two players and up to any amount a pool will hold. The more players there are, the more rounds there will be. Kids of all ages have fun playing this classic game, but everyone must be able to swim.

    You&'re It

    • The person who is “it” closes his eyes and shouts “Marco” to the rest of the players. Eyes must remain closed throughout that person’s turn, as the round will start over if that person opens his eyes before he’s tagged another player. Once this person tags another player, that tagged player now becomes “it” and a new round starts. The person who is "it" can go in or out of the water as necessary.

    Not It

    • The other players in the pool who are not “it” will be trying their hardest to stay away from the person who is, so they are not tagged. After each “Marco” shouted by the one who is “it,” the other players must shout out “Polo” in response. These players can go under water, but must always come up to yell “Polo” if they hear “Marco” called. If a player does not call back and the person who is “it” realizes who isn’t answering, that person will automatically become the new “it” person and a new round will start.

    Fish Out of Water

    • If the players who are not “it” choose to get out of the pool, they must do so quietly and discretely. If the person who is “it” suspects that someone has gotten out of the pool, he may yell “fish out of water,” which would automatically tag the person who is out of the pool and start a new round.
