Winter Games to Play

Cold, snowy winter weather doesn’t mean staying indoors all season. Instead, gather friends and family to compete in some outdoor winter games. Traditional outdoor winter activities, such as snowball fights, snowman building and sledding, take on a new twist with the addition of a team and game element.
  1. Snowball Throwing Contest

    • Ready, aim and fire up for a snowball throwing contest. Instead of throwing at one another, FamilyFun.com suggests creating a large bull's-eye target in the snow with food coloring and spray bottles, and testing the accuracy of your throwing. The point value of each section can be displayed with a numbered flag on a stick. Keep score until a team or player reaches 100.

    Snowman Building Contest

    • Create two teams and see which can build a snowman the fastest or at a designated height first. Younger players may have trouble rolling the snowballs, according to Family Fun, and would benefit by being teamed with an older player. Add points for the funniest or most creative snowman face.

    Sledding Contest

    • Whether sledding down a hill or being pulled in a sled, organizing a sledding contest can bring the traditional winter activity to a whole new level. If sledding down a hill, designate a finish line for racers. On a flat surface, choose one person to pull the sled while one or more others ride the sled for a short or long race on a predetermined course. For an additional challenge, try a game of tag.

    Obstacle Course

    • Cold, snow and ice provide an opportunity to host several outdoor games in one setting by organizing a mini winter obstacle course. Include a snow relay race, snow hurdles and sledding down a hill, or take indoor obstacle course ideas outside. Adaptable ideas for indoor obstacle courses, provided by FamilyEducation.com, include jumping in and out of a hula hoop five times, ring toss and jumping jacks.
