Velcro Activities

Velcro isn’t just for shoes anymore. Today, the adhesive product is used for a variety of activities. Velcro is a key ingredient in childhood games aimed at improving motor skills and teaching recall. Velcro can be used to create a fun, challenging outdoor activity wall.
  1. Number Board

    • Velcro can be used as part of an interactive bulletin board designed to help preschool or kindergarten students learn their numbers. Take a large foam board or sheet of wood and cover it with felt. Print out large numbers and pictures with groups of items on them that match the numbers. For example, the number 1 and one teddy bear, the number 2 and two geese, the number 3 and three frogs, and so on. Cover all of the number and item cards with contact paper. Add Velcro to the back side of each card. Put an item card up on the board and have the kids choose the number card that corresponds. Children can also sing counting songs, placing the numbers on the board as they go. They can also use the board to put numbers in order.

    Apple Game

    • Gather together red, yellow and green construction paper; three pieces of poster board; clear contact paper; markers; scissors; and Velcro. Draw a bunch of apples on the paper. Cut them out and cover with contact paper. Place Velcro on the back of the apples. Draw a tree on each piece of poster board. Attach the adhesive piece of Velcro throughout the tree branches and attach apples to the trees. There are multiple games kids can play using this same simple setup. Pass out paper lunch sacks and encourage kids to go apple picking. The child with the most apples in his sack wins the game. For a spin on the apple-picking game, develop color patterns such as red, green, yellow, green. The child who picks the apples in the correct order fastest wins the game.

    Velcro Wall

    • Set up large walls for outdoor parties, barbecues or community fairs. Cover the wall in Velcro and have participants wear a corresponding Velcro suit. Party participants run and jump at the wall, seeing who can stick higher up. Consider setting one of these up at a carnival-themed fundraiser. Encourage donors to pledge on how high their sponsored runner can jump on the wall.
