Rubber Chicken Activities

The rubber chicken has potential beyond a comedian&'s prop. These joke items make simple playground games more fun. Look for rubber chickens at toy stores and on the Internet. Keep a supply of these ready with other playground equipment for twists on classic games.
  1. Chicken Tag

    • Play tag with a rubber chicken. The person who is “It” holds the chicken and runs to tag others. Randomly select one person to be “It” at the beginning of the game, then hand her a rubber chicken. This person chases after the other players, touching them with the hand not holding the chicken. A tagged player must sit on the ground, and he&'s considered “out” unless another player touches him. Play lasts until the tagger touches every other player, and the last one tagged is "It" in the next game. Alternatively, whenever the tagger touches a player, he passes her the rubber chicken and she becomes "it." This version lasts until everyone agrees to end the game.

    Rubber Chicken Toss

    • Challenge a group of children to toss rubber chickens to each other without using their hands. The children can kick the chicken, bounce it off their heads or use their elbows to fling it to another child, who must catch it without using his hands.

    Capture the Chicken

    • Instead of a flag in capture the flag, use rubber chickens. Divide the group into two teams, each with their own chicken and half the play area. The chicken must remain in each team&'s territory until a player from the opposite team steals it. To protect their chicken, players on one team tag opposing players, who must return to their half of the play area before restarting game play.

    Chicken in a Basket

    • Replace the ball in a game of basketball with a rubber chicken for a new challenge.

Replace the ball in a game of basketball with a rubber chicken, using mostly the same rules as basketball. Since the rubber chicken cannot bounce, omit the basketball rules about traveling and dribbling, but play as you would a full- or half-court basketball game. Ideally, use a hoop without a net, since a rubber chicken could easily become entangled in netting.
