What Materials Are Needed to Make a Wine Glass Sing?

According to Science Buddies, singing wine glasses are based on Benjamin Franklin's armonica principle. Making a wine glass sing can be an activity to enjoy on your own, to impress friends and family or to use as a science project. There are only three materials needed to make a wine glass sing.

Wine Glass
- A clean wine glass. According to the ExperiMENTALS, a thin-walled, crystal wine glass is the best for this experiment. Ensure that the wine glass is clean and dry.
Glass of Water
- With a separate glass of water, carefully pour the desired amount into the wine glass. The amount of water will control the pitch of the sound emitted from the wine glass. For example, if you want a higher pitch, pour in less water.
Your Hands
- With one hand, hold the wine glass steady at the base of the glass. With the other hand, wet one finger by dipping it into the wine glass. Press your finger to the rim while drawing it around the rim of the glass in a circle. The right amount of pressure and moisture will make the wine glass sing.
