Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt is a traditional game that gets a new twist when you use a playhouse as a home base. Start by giving each child a list of items they must find. Children can run around the yard foraging for items like branches, red leaves and white rocks. Make it a condition that they must bring each item back to the playhouse and place it inside before moving on to the next item. The first child to get all her treasures inside the playhouse wins.
Pirate Sleuth
Pirates are a popular motif for kids, and little ones love pretending to be pirates on the high seas looking for buried treasure. Make a few additions to your playhouse that will let kids imagine the space as a pirate ship. Hand out old paper towel rolls to act as spy glasses, place a foot stool to one side of the playhouse for a crow's nest, and give kids pirate hats and eye patches to complete the game. They can even use an old shoe box to decorate as a treasure chest, and bury the item underneath an outdoor playhouse.
Theater Make Believe
Turning your kid's playhouse into a makeshift theater is a new twist on the old dress-up standby. Fill the inside of the playhouse with old costume items like princess dresses, fairy wings, cowboy hats and odds and ends from leftover Halloween costumes. Prop open the doors to the playhouse to act as the curtain and let little ones take turns running inside the playhouse, donning their favorite costume pieces, and coming out to act a scene for an audience of their friends.
