Pinewood Derby Game
This free online animated game allows you to create your own car and paint it however you wish. Once the car is crafted, you can race the car against computer-controlled Pinewood cars in three separate races. You must win to advance from one race to the next. To win the game, you must win all three races. The game isn’t exactly true to how Pinewood Derby races work, but it can be fun for kids who are not yet old enough to participate in a real Pinewood Derby. The game is available for free at the Boys' Life site .
Pinewood Derby for PC
For a game that works like traditional Pinewood Derby racing, this game for Windows XP and Vista is officially licensed by the Boy Scouts of America. The game was designed by U &I Entertainment, and it allows several players to customize cars and go against up to 25 computer opponents. Players can go through all the activities involved in building the car, such as sanding, polishing and painting. The game can be purchased at online retailers.
Award Show
Not all Pinewood Derby's focus completely on the fastest cars. Create many different categories for your Scouts and parents to vote on. These categories can include Best Imagination, Best Paint Job, Funniest, Best Vehicle that Isn't a Car, and Best Fuel Economy (also known as the slowest car). Before all of the cars race, hold a presentation with all of the racers and their cars. Hand out a sheet with all the possible awards (and some spaces for new awards for the day) to all the Scouts and parents and have them take notes on which cars to give the awards to. Ideally, this game allows you and the Scouts to recognize each other for the hard work put into the derby and enables everybody to get a prize.
Derby Wall Attack
This game allows you to use Pinewood Derby cars from previous years, since the cars may get damaged. The object of the game is to roll the car across a cleared space of floor or down a separate, unused derby track and have the car come as close as possible to the wall without hitting it. The game takes precision and focus and gives the Scouts something to do once their cars have been eliminated. Some of these cars will hit the wall, so make sure that none of the Scouts use a car that they or their parents wish to keep as a souvenir.
