How to Build a Deck for Low Cost

Almost any home can be enhanced with a nice deck area. Space outside a kitchen, bedroom or family room is ideal to build a deck for cooking, relaxing or entertaining guests. If the ground area is relatively level, a deck can be built relatively inexpensively with recycled lumber. A simple design must include ample support posts set in solid concrete foundations, however. Any deck can crumble in a short time without a proper support system in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a sketch pad to draw the type of deck you have in mind. Consult home design books to gain ideas for various options. Use measuring tools to define the space and determine how much materials to buy. Plan to build wooden support posts spaced every four to six feet for a small deck. Use a professional plan to define where support posts will be placed for a deck larger than 8-feet by 8-feet, since this kind of weight requires a professional design.

    • 2

Dig small footings for each post. The holes should measure eight inches by eight inches and 12 inches deep. Fill this space with concrete to hold support posts for the deck. Once the posts are in place, use 2-inch by 10-inch pressure-treated boards to construct the perimeter framing for the deck. Install floor joists every 24 inches. Nail the structure together with 4-inch stainless steel nails. Bolt the deck to house framing along a common wall. Install 4-inch stainless steel screws with an electric screwdriver to attach all framing more securely.

    • 3

Secure 2-inch by 6-inch lumber boards to the top of the structure to form the actual decking. Counter-sink nails and screws to avoid incidents with snagging when the deck is used. Use only screws in the center part of the deck floor where most traffic flow will take place. Add posts and railings on top of the decking with 36-inch tall handrails. Construct steps leading off the deck with 2-inch by10-inch boards. Use the smoothest boards for the handrail sections on top of the railings. Install seating in certain areas of the deck nailed directly to the flooring and the rail areas.

    • 4

Sand all rough areas of the deck with an electric sander. Sand all seating areas for benches built around the deck as well. Place black plastic under the deck to kill grass and weeds, pushing the plastic all the way back to touch along the common house wall.

Brush or roll on stain in three separate coats on the decking, railing and support posts. Allow each coat to dry for 12 hours before adding another.
