Badminton Rules for Kids

To play badminton, kids will need a badminton racket for each player, a birdie and a net. Typically, all of these supplies may be purchased together as a set. The game can be played in a spacious back yard area or on a badminton or tennis court. The sports of badminton involves competition either between two individuals or two teams made up of two players each.
  1. Serving the Bird

    • To begin the game, one player serves the bird to the other team by throwing it in the air and then hitting it to the other side of the net where the opposition waits to try to hit the birdie back to the individual or team that served the bird. If the birdie fails to go over the net or if goes outside of the specified court area, then the other team gets to serve.

    Rallying

    • Rallying occurs when both sides continue to hit the birdie back and forth without letting the birdie touch the ground. Young players will need a lot of practice before being able to rally for a long period of time. Individuals or teams win the rally and score a point when the opposing side lets the birdie hit the ground.

    Winning

    • To win the game of badminton, the individual player or team must score 15 points. Two games equal a match. If after the end of two games a tie occurs, then the players will play a third game to determine who wins the match. The amount of points needed to win may be reduced for young children just learning to play.
