Serving the Bird
To begin the game, one player serves the bird to the other team by throwing it in the air and then hitting it to the other side of the net where the opposition waits to try to hit the birdie back to the individual or team that served the bird. If the birdie fails to go over the net or if goes outside of the specified court area, then the other team gets to serve.
Rallying
Rallying occurs when both sides continue to hit the birdie back and forth without letting the birdie touch the ground. Young players will need a lot of practice before being able to rally for a long period of time. Individuals or teams win the rally and score a point when the opposing side lets the birdie hit the ground.
Winning
To win the game of badminton, the individual player or team must score 15 points. Two games equal a match. If after the end of two games a tie occurs, then the players will play a third game to determine who wins the match. The amount of points needed to win may be reduced for young children just learning to play.
