Great Games to Play in the Snow

Winter allows adults, teens and children some opportunities to play in the snowy outdoors. Nature's white stuff adds a challenge to many games that are played year-round. Other games that require snow become available when such weather conditions exist.
  1. Snow Forts

    • Building snow forts are a method of entertainment in areas that draw snows measured by the foot. Build them far enough part so that you can engage in a long-range snowball fight. Once they are built, place a colored flag at the front of each fort and try to capture the other team's flag while trying to avoid being pelted by snowballs or falling in the slippery snow.

    Snow Tag

    • Designate one person as "it," who must throw snowballs at the others while they run around and hide behind outdoor objects. When someone is hit, that person is now "it." You can also change the rules a little. Have everyone throw snowballs. Anyone who is hit is out of the game. Continue until one player is left; that player is the winner.

    Snow Sculpture

    • Just as there are sand-sculpture contests, there can also be snow-sculpture contests. Creating a snow sculpture works best when the snow can be packed. Have contests that recognize the sculptures that are tallest, funniest, most original, most true-to-life or are the most appropriate for another category. Use food coloring to add color to a piece.

    Target Throwing

    • Children and adults can line up soda cans or other objects along a fence or outdoor table and try to knock down the most by throwing snowballs at them.

    Relay Races

    • Mark a finish line by using food coloring or drawing a line in the snow. Divide into teams of two. Tie one leg from each person together and race the others to the finish line. Have teams carry the same size snowball on a metal spoon or spatula across the line. Sit on a circular plastic sled and scoot to the finish line, or wear snowshoes or snow skis to the finish line.

    Football

    • Running around in the snow can spice up a football game by allowing for more physical contact. Playing in the snow softens the blow if you end up falling or being tackled.

    Tug-of-War

    • Split into two teams and play a game of tug-of-war. Instead of sand beneath your feet, you will have snow, which makes your footing more precarious. Use food coloring or draw a line in the snow to mark the middle. The team that pulls everyone from the opposing team beyond the line is the winner.

    Treasure Hunt

    • Hide a piece of "treasure" (basket of candy, toys or other gifts) somewhere deep within the snow and develop a map or a set of clues that leads players to the location. You can place a different treasure at various places on the map or bury the clues in the snow so that the players must find the first clue, which leads them to another clue, and another, and eventually, the treasure.
