Name Memorization Game
The purpose of the memorization game is to assist group members in learning the names of the other participants. Start the activity by having the entire group stand in a circle with a volunteer in the middle. Give the group members an opportunity to introduce themselves with first and last name to the two people on either side of them. Have the volunteer in the middle select someone in the circle and say, "Right" or "Left." The chosen participant must look to whichever side was commanded and without fumbling say the person's first and last name. If the person stumbles on the name or does not get it correct, he or she must replace the person in the middle. The group then shuffles and the game begins again.
Beach Ball Activity
The beach ball game uses teamwork to keep a beach ball suspended in the air, but also acts as an icebreaker activity. Have the group sit or stand in a circle and toss a beach ball into the air. The group must work together to keep the ball up in the air. The excitement of keeping the ball suspended encourages group participants to work together by offering words of support to their peers. Asking group members to say their name each time they push the ball into the air will help participants learn names as well.
Similarities
Divide the group into smaller groups based on a category, such as shoe color, marital status, or height. Have the small group participants talk amongst themselves to learn other similarities and differences. Hold a small discussion session after approximately 10 minutes with the whole group so group members can talk about what they learned about their fellow peers. Ask the group if they were surprised about any differences or similarities and why. This discussion technique teaches group members about diversity and respecting others for their differences.
Team Knot
The team knot activity assists a group in working together, which enhances communication skills among a diverse group. Have the group stand in a tight circle and grab hands with two different participants across the circle. Without letting go of hands, the group must untangle itself. Encourage the group to work as a team.
