Rules on Pool Cues

A pool cue (or cue stick) is a piece of sporting equipment used in the game of pool to strike a ball. The cue consists of a tip, a ferule, a shaft, a forewrap, a grip, and an afterwrap. These parts of the cue must be a specific size in competitive pool organizations like the Billiard Congress of America or the World Pool-Billiard Association.
  1. Length

    • Pool cues may not be shorter than 40 inches in length. There is no maximum length limit for pool cues.

    Weight

    • Pool cues may not be heavier than 25 ounces. All pool cues weighing less than 25 ounces are allowed for competition.

    Tip Width

    • There is not a minimum width for a pool cue tip, but the maximum width of a tip is 14 millimeters.

    Materials

    • A cue tip may not be created from a material that can scratch or damage a cue ball. The cue tip typically consists of a specially processed leather, pliable material or fibrous material that causes no harm to the cue ball. The ferrule, the material supporting the tip, cannot be more than 1 inch long if it is made of metal.

    Additional Rules

    • Players are not allowed to bring more than three cue sticks to an official match.
