Rules of a Double Player in Table Tennis

Table tennis, also known as pingpong, can be played with two players or four. When teams of two play on opposite ends of the table, it is known as doubles. Rules for doubles are similar to single table tennis rules, with a few key exceptions.
  1. Serving

    • The server for the team serves from the right side of his end of the table, and the server must deliver the ball to the opposing team in the service area that's diagonally opposite his own service area. In a 21-point game, this player serves until five points have been scored by either team, and then the opposing team serves for five points. The next five points will be served by the player who hadn't served the first time. This alternation takes place for the entire game until one team wins. In a game to 15, the serve alternates every two points. If a served ball hits the line in the opposite service court, the serve is good.

    Scoring

    • Games are normally played to 15 points, and teams must win by two points. If a game is tied at 14, the winning team is whichever one can reach a two-point lead. Players must alternate hitting when volleying for points. If a player on one side hits the ball two times in a row during a volley, a point is awarded to the opposing team. General table tennis rules apply to scoring in every other aspect. Players can't let a ball bounce twice during volley, fail to hit the ball or fail to hit the ball over the net on an attempted return.

    Equipment

    • All equipment used in doubles is the same as that used in single play table tennis. One pingpong ball should be used, but keep a spare ball nearby in case of damage to the game ball. Regulations tables and nets should be maintained, with an important detail being the center line on the table that is perpendicular to the net. This line indicates where a serve must land on the opposing team's side.
