5th And 6th Grade Math & Social Study Games

Whether you are a parent trying to motivate your children to practice their math and social-study skills, a teacher looking for new ways to entice your students to learn or an ambitious student wishing to practice your studies outside of class, these games are a great way to meet your goals. Many math and social study games are available free on the Internet, and can be played online or downloaded to your computer.
  1. Funschool 5th-6th Grade Math

    • Funschool provides an extensive list of games for fifth- and sixth-graders that include both math and social study games. Examples include Action Fraction, a game in which players learn about fractions and practice adding and subtracting them using different denominators. Players must click the correct answer in order to move their car toward the finish line. Capital Field Trip asks players to match state capitals with the appropriate state using an unlabeled map of the United States. My World quizzes players on geography by asking them to place countries in the correct place on a world map.

    Mapman

    • Mapman is a game created by Scholastic, a news magazine for kids. In this ever-changing activity, Scholastic's cartographer poses four different questions to players involving geography. The game also provides tips and hints to players if they cannot figure out the answer right away. The questions change frequently, so players can always come back for new ones. There is also an archive of old questions for students to explore.

    National Geographic Xpeditions

    • These National Geographic activities, titled Xpeditions, include a list of different adventures for students to complete by themselves, with their peers or with their families or parents. These Xpeditions are presented as puzzles that students must solve in order to complete the mission. They involve using different types of social study skills, and are adaptable to both younger, less experienced students, and older students or those who may have more social study skills. There is also a section in each Xpedition that gives hints and tips to parents to help their students with the mission. The Activities section includes dozens of different missions to embark on, as well as additional lesson plans that coordinate with each Xpedition, extra material and information that relates to the topic, and interactive features that allow students to explore the topic further. This website is a great way for students to research and explore topics they are interested in.
