Math Literacy Games

Math literacy means understanding the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. According to Oxford Learning, math literacy involves the ability to problem-solve, reason and analyze information. It also means understanding math terms, such as "sum" and "difference." Math games are one way to achieve math literacy. Students often learn important math skills through playing games.
  1. Part Part Whole

    • Improve your addition skills.

Part Part Whole is an addition game. Your goal is to protect a planet called Sum Total from alien attack. The aliens are angry because their partners are missing. Each alien's spaceship has a numerical value. The value should always equal 100, but doesn't because of the missing partners. Your job is to restore each spaceship's value to 100.

You're armed with a cannon loaded with numbers. Add the numbers on the spaceships with the numbers on your cannon. When the total is 100, fire your cannon at the appropriate spaceship. If your cannon is ready to fire a 10, search for a spaceship with 90 on the front. Fire the 10 at the 90 to get 100 and remove the alien. If you make it past level 3, you work with fractions and decimals.

    Math Fact Practice

    • Math Fact Practice offers various math skills. You must solve as many problems as possible before time runs out. Choose from addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You also can choose one of five skill levels. The problems increase in difficulty based on the skill level you choose. Level one is the easiest and level five is the most difficult. The timer's default setting is two minutes, but you can adjust it up to 10 minutes.

Once the game begins, math problems appear onscreen. Enter the correct answer to advance to the next problem. If you don't know an answer, skip it to reveal the solution.

    Speed Grid Challenge Subtraction

    • How many numbers can you subtract without a calculator?

Speed Grid Challenge Subtraction is a fast-paced subtraction game. It's you and your subtraction skills against the clock. Select the number of questions you want to answer, up to 99 of them. You must also set the timer for between two to 10 minutes. When the game begins a number grid appears onscreen. Beneath the grid is a subtraction problem. Solve the problem using the numbers in the grid.
