Washer Board Outdoor Games

If you are looking for a game that can be played outdoors similar to horseshoes that won't damage the ground, washer board games meet this need. Washer board games are portable and can be played at cookouts, family reunions or at tailgate parties. Each game can be played between two players, or teams of two can compete in washer board. Washer board games are not strictly an outdoor game; they can be played indoors as well.
  1. Three Hole

    • The three-hole washer toss game is a game where each player takes turns trying to throw one of his three washers into one of the three holes on the washer board. Players choose a distance to throw from based on skill level. The closest hole is worth two points, the middle hole is worth three points, and the furthest hole is worth five points. If each player lands a single washer in the same hole, the points for that hole are cancelled for that hole. Play continues until one of the players reaches a score of 21 exactly. If a player's score goes over 21, her score returns to what it was before that round instead of winning. If there is a tie at 21, play continues until one player has more points than another at the end of a round.

    Two Hole

    • The two-holed version of washer toss is enclosed in a small, open-topped wooden box. Players attempt to land a washer into one of the holes, which are made out of two different sizes of PVC pipe. The smaller hole is worth three points and the larger one is worth two points. If each player lands one washer in either tube, those points are cancelled. This can be very challenging, so one point is also awarded to each player landing a washer in the box that does not land inside one of the PVC pipe tubes.Players compete until reaching 21 (exceeding 21 is permitted in this game). If both players exceed 21 on this game, the player with the highest score wins. If there is still a tie, additional rounds are played until one player has a higher score after a round.

    Single Hole

    • The single-hole washer game is played with aspects from the two-holed game as well as horseshoes. There is a single target, which is a tube made out of PVC pipe, inside a small, open-topped box. Players compete trying to throw washers into the PVC pipe from a distance agreed upon. In this game, three points are awarded for throwing the washer in the pipe; if each player lands a washer in the pipe the points for those washers are cancelled. If no washers land in the pipe, the player who threw a washer closest to the pipe wins one point. Players compete to see who can score 21 first; if both equal or exceed 21 on the same turn, the player with the higher score wins. Additional rounds are played in the case of a tie until one player is winning at the end of a round.
