Fun Summer Games or Activities for Senior Citizens

The summer is a wonderful time for seniors to go outside, enjoy the fresh air and engage in games or activities. Whether seniors are seeking independent sedentary games, fitness-minded games, or travel activities, there are plenty of options available. Many games and activities are inexpensive or free and can provide hours of recreational fun.
  1. Walking

    • Warm weather is the perfect time for seniors to take a stroll. If they live near the shore, seniors can walk on the boardwalk or the beach. Suburban residents can walk around their neighborhoods or take a stroll to a local school and walk around the school's track. There are also many quaint outdoor shopping areas for seniors to combine a nice walk with shopping.

    Water Aerobics

    • Many senior centers and fitness facilities offer water aerobics classes specifically designed for seniors. Water naturally reduces excessive heat and the water's buoyancy makes it easy for seniors to move. Exercising in water is less likely to induce injury than other forms of exercise. Additionally, water aerobics classes are often inexpensive and promote a healthy heart.

    Senior Summer School

    • Senior Summer School provides students the opportunity to learn, travel, and became engaged in their surroundings. Programs are geared towards different interests and include lectures, sight seeing, and opportunities to explore culture. Classes are specifically targeted to seniors aged 50 years and over. Prices vary depending on the length of the program, the location and the number of occupants in the class. Seniors can escape the summer heat by choosing locations that are cooler than their primary residence. Programs run for two to six weeks and include housing accommodations, meals and entertainment. Prospective students can contact Senior Summer School's Wisconsin or Arizona office for more information.

    Wii Bowling

    • Seniors are getting more interested in electronic games, in particular Wii Bowling. There are even Wii Bowling leagues and tournaments just for senior citizens. The game motivates seniors to exercise without requiring them to lug around a heavy bowling ball. Also, they are able to enjoy the competition of a regular bowling game. Additionally, the game can be played indoors out of the summer heat.

    Brain Games

    • Many seniors live alone, but fortunately there are a wealth of mind stimulating games that they can do anywhere. Crossword puzzles, Suduko puzzles, logic and word games appeal to seniors and can be done around a pool, at the beach or home, and even in a restaurant. Puzzle books can be purchased, but the newspaper also offers daily word games. Free games can also be found online as well.
