Fun Barney Games

Barney, the popular purple tyrannosaurus rex, may make some adults cringe thanks to his ever-sweet demeanor and anthemic "I Love You" song, but he continues to provide fun and learning to millions of young children via the PBS program, "Barney &Friends." Kids can play a number of Barney games that incorporate the series' protagonist, as well as his fellow dinosaur friends, Baby Bop, BJ and Riff.
  1. Barney: First Fishing Game

    • Players catch fish from the pond in Hasbro's board game, "Barney: First Fishing Game." After placing the pond on a flat surface, players put cardboard dividers on the pond; the dividers' colors must match the color of the paddle between the borders. Players choose their color (green, purple, red or yellow) and put the old boot and 24 fish into the pond (six of each color). When everyone's ready, players paddle to make the fish wiggle and flop in the air, and land their color fish in their area. When no fish remain in the pond, players look at what they have collected and keep all fish that match their paddle color; players return all other fish to the pond. If players catch the old boot, they throw it back, but also must throw back one of their color fish. Play continues until one player catches all of her fish. As a variation, players may paddle and play continuously until one player collects all of her fish.

    Barney: Secret of the Rainbow

    • Barney and friends take players on an educational journey to save the colors of the rainbow in Nova Development's "Barney: Secret of the Rainbow," available for Mac and Windows systems. Along with his friends, Barney tries to save the rainbow and restore happiness to the land. The game includes multiple skill levels and lets players use their creativity and imagination, and learn computer, memory, problem solving and social skills.

    Barney's Hide &Seek Game

    • Players guide Barney in his quest to find hidden children in Sega of America's "Barney's Hide &Seek Game," available for the Sega Genesis platform or as a trial download at the Console Classix site (see References). Upon finding the kids, Barney hugs them and sends them off to buy an "I survived 'Jurassic Park'"shirt. The game includes four playing areas and also requires players to find the presents that the children have hidden.

    Let's Go! Playset

    • Available at Barney's official website (see References), "Let's Go! Playset" lets players place "stickers" onto various farm, firehouse and zoo settings. To see more options for "Friends," "Things" and "Animals," players click the arrow keys on the screen. To alter the size of an item they placed on the screen, players click "Change size" on the bottom right of the screen and then click on the item to increase or decrease its size. To reverse the direction of any item they placed on the screen, players click "Flip" and then click on the item. Clicking the green "Let's Go" icon on the bottom right of the screen makes the "Friends" and "Animals" move.

    Role-Play Game

    • Barney fans can put their own spin on "Barney &Friends" by assuming the roles of Barney, Baby Bop, BJ and Riff. If kids do not have costumes for a role-play game, adults may do some online comparison shopping for the best deals. Kids can act out their favorite scenes from the TV show or create their own adventure, taking turns playing the different characters. If kids do not want to dress in Barney attire, they may use Barney plush toys or action figures to act out "Barney &Friends" scenes.
