Spelling Activities for Middle School

Spelling activities can make learning more enjoyable for kids in middle school. During this period, the kids may easily tire of studying. Some spelling activities will encourage the students to learn while enjoying the activity. Spelling does not always have to be memorization for the students. Memorizing the spellings of words can be tiring, which is why spelling activities work best for this type of lesson.
  1. Spelling Bee

    • Hold a small spelling bee competition in the classroom. Spelling bees are always fun for students. It gives them a chance to learn while at the same time play a game with their classmates. Giving out prizes to winners of the spelling bee is a good way to motivate the students. This will encourage them to do their best during the competition. Divide the spelling bee competition into different parts to have more fun. There can be a portion where the students spell out the words by themselves and another portion where the student chooses the right spelling of the word from a choice of words. Apart from prizes, let the students gain extra points for quizzes by performing well in the spelling bee competitions.

    Original Narrative

    • Another good idea for a spelling activity for the middle school level is to let them create a narrative story. Provide the students with a list of words that are appropriate to their grade level. Ask the students to use all the words to create a narrative story that they can share with the entire class. This not only helps them memorize the spellings of the words, it will also help them understand what the words mean. Apart from that, they will be unleashing their creativity while they write their own stories.

    Activity Sheets

    • Give out activity sheets to the students containing all the spelling words that they need to learn. The activity sheet can have a crossword puzzle or a word search with the spelling words. Another game for the activity sheet can be jumbled words. Jumble the spelling words up and allow the students to unscramble the letters and provide the correct spelling for each word. Give out additional points to students who finish the activity sheet quickly and gain a perfect score. This will help the students be familiar with the spelling of the words so it will be easier to memorize.
