Mini Bean Bag Games

There are several different types of games that can be played using mini bean bags. These games are popular because they can be played by individuals of all ages, sizes and abilities. In addition, these types of games are very inexpensive to either build or purchase separately. Many bean bag games are popular at carnivals or fairs, with the winner getting a prize at the end. In addition, these games can be set up for birthday parties, tailgating at sporting events and just general play in a backyard or indoor playroom.
  1. Tailgate Bean Bag Toss

    • One of the most popular bean-bag toss game is the tailgate bean-bag toss game, or cornhole game. This game is played with two boards that are 24" wide by 48" long, with a hole approximately 6 inches in diameter and 9 inches from the top of the board and 12 inches from each side. The boards are placed 27 feet apart from one another (or depending on space limitations, the boards can be closer), and can be played with either singles or doubles. Singles means that two people are playing each other in the game, and doubles means a team of two plays another team of two. Each team gets four bean bags to throw, and when the bag is thrown, the player must be three feet behind the end of the board (making the total distance to the opposite board approximately 30 feet). The first team throws all four bags, then the other team follows. For each bean bag that goes in the hole, the team that threw the bag gets three points. For every bean bag that lands with any portion of the bag resting on the hole, but doesn't go in, the team that threw the bag gets one point. The game continues until one team reaches 21 points. The game can be played with regular-sized or mini bean bags.

Many of these cornhole tables are elaborately decorated with team logos or other decorations. In addition, they can be easily built at home with some simple tools, and the boards transport and store very well.

    Bean-Bag Toss

    • Similar to cornhole, another popular game with mini-bean bags is the bean-bag toss. This involves one board, leaned against a wall or post, that has three to six holes on the board in different places. Each hole has a netting attached to the back of the hole to hold the bean bag after it is tossed into the hole. Each hole has a different point value, ranging from one to six. These games are particularly popular with kids because it helps teach them hand-eye coordination, and it is a game that can be easily taught without a lot of rules.

To play, one player takes their mini bean bags (typically, each board comes with the same number of bean bags as there are holes on the board), and throws them at the board. After all the bags have been thrown, the total number of points is added up based on the amount of bean bags the player got into the holes on the board.

    Accuracy Toss

    • Another popular carnival game, especially for small children, is a bean-bag accuracy toss game. A target is placed on the ground, approximately eight to ten feet away from a starting position. If the children are smaller, the distance can be shortened. The target is a center spot approximately six inches in diameter, surrounded by three concentric rings that are approximately eight, 10 and 12 inches in diameter, respectively. Overall, when the target is complete, it will look like a dart board.

The players stand at the start position and try to get the bean bag into one of the three concentric rings surrounding the target, or the center spot to score points. Each ring has a different value. The outside ring can be worth one point, the middle ring two points, and the inner ring three points with the target in the middle being worth five points. The player with the most points at the end of tossing all three bean bags wins the game.
