Adult Lawn Games

Whether you're throwing a neighborhood barbecue or having a family summer holiday party, lawn games are a way to keep guests entertained and enjoying the great outdoors. Many games require very little equipment, all of which you can find at most sporting goods retailers and some toy stores. You can adjust the rules, regulations and scoring to suit your individual needs or go by some guidelines outlined on the Party 411 and Home Furnish websites.
  1. Bocce Ball

    • Bocce ball is a game that resembles bowling ideal for those who like to play without the threat of a gutter ball. All you need is a bocce ball set and a patch of ground, according to Party 411. Regulation bocce courts are 76 feet long and 10 feet wide, but you can go for a smaller court. Divide the players into two teams, each with the same number of balls. Set up the target on the opposite end of the ground from where the teams are standing. The target is a small ball called a pallina, but the City of Parkland website points out the target can also be a pin, also known as a jack. Sets may come with either target. The goal is to get the bocce ball as close to the target as possible. One team starts by bowling a ball, with the other team taking its turn and throwing balls until one of its balls comes closer to the target than the first team's ball. The first team goes again with the goal of getting its balls closer to the target than the second team's ball. Repeat until all the balls are used. The team with the closest ball gets one point for that ball as well as a single point for each ball that is closer to the target than their opponent's nearest ball. Gather the balls for another round and keep playing until one team gets 16 points.

    Horseshoes

    • Horseshoes is another adult lawn game with the goal of getting near a specified target. The goal is to get your shoes around a metal stake in the ground. Party 411 says to set up two metal stakes, gather four horseshoes and get two teams, with each getting two horseshoes. The first person on the first team throws both his horseshoes at one stake. The first person on the second team throws both his horseshoes at the other stake. A horseshoe within six inches of the stake merits one point, while a horseshoe that is not touching the stake but still circling it gets three points. The second person from each team takes her turn, with the scoring and throwing repeated until one team gets 40 points or both teams have thrown a total of 40 shoes, whichever comes first.

Party 411 notes the standard distance to stand from the stake is 37 feet and that you should mark a line to indicate the distance. Smaller players or those with less strength can stand 27 feet from the stake.

    Volleyball

    • Volleyball is a game that can be played with as few as two players as well as larger teams, according to the Home Furnish website. All you need is a net, a volleyball and a place to set up the net. Divide players into two teams, with one team starting off the game with a serve. The serving player stands at the back edge of his team's court and hits the ball over the net to the other team. Each team's goal is to hit the ball back over the net without letting the ball hit the ground. When the ball hits the ground on one team's side, the other team gets a chance to serve the ball. In a popular scoring method called sideout, only the serving team can get a point, with one point given if the ball it served hits the ground on the opposing team's side. If the ball hits the ground on the serving team's side, the opposing team gets a chance to serve, and therefore win a point. Play until one team scores 15 points; note, however, that a team can win only if it's leading by at least two points. Play a match by going for the best two games out of three or the best three games out of five.
