Indian Reservation Casinos in Michigan

In November 1996, Michigan voters decided that three casinos could be built in Detroit. Since that time, laws have been passed to increase the number of casinos throughout the state. These casinos vie with Native American casinos, and although business has declined slightly because of the additional casinos, casinos on Native American reservations are still a thriving business. Native American casinos are not governed by state or federal law because the tribes are sovereign nations. Instead, they are governed by the National Indian Gaming Commission and the tribal government that owns them.
