Identification
The felt on a pool table is also known as billiard felt, pool table cloth, a green and a cover. The felt provides a smooth surface on which to play the game of pool (sometimes known as billiards).
Durability
There are several important facts to consider when purchasing pool table felt. One factor is durability. The quality of the wool that is in the cloth determines how durable the felt will be. The felt on pool tables that are primarily for at-home use will last longer than commercial tables because of the simple fact that it is not used as often. The weight of the fabric is also a determining factor as to how durable it will be. Pool table felt that is at least 19-oz. weight per yard will be more durable than fabrics at a lesser weight. The tightness of the weave of the fabric is also important in choosing the right pool felt. A fabric that is made of a looser weave is less durable than a tighter weave because not as much material is used.
Speed
The two most important factors in the speed of pool table felt are the process used in finishing the fabric and the amount of wool used in the blend of the fabric. Napped cloth will develop ridges over time, and that may affect the speed of the ball. Worsted cloth is smooth and has a nap. With worsted cloth, you will not get fuzz on the felt, and there is no nap. The finishing process used in worsted cloth often produces a more precise fabric and allows for speed and ball accuracy.
Quality
When looking for a high-quality pool table felt, consider the type of use it will be receiving. A higher-quality cloth may have stain-fighting Teflon in the cloth and may be a good choice if you have children or teenagers. If you are looking for a professional-grade cloth, a worsted cloth may be your best bet. Pool table felt is also available in a wide range of colors as well.
Considerations
When you replace your pool table felt, be sure to adhere to the manufacturer's directions on how to care for the fabric. Pool table felt will last much longer if it is properly maintained. This will help the fabric remain true, and it will look much better during the life of the felt.
