Directions for a Washer Toss Game

The washer toss game is a fun, outdoor game for many families. The history of the game is difficult to determine since there is no documentation. The game is also known as Polish horseshoes, Hillbilly horseshoes, Redneck horseshoes and Texas horseshoes. You can play with two people competing against each other or with four people, paired into two teams. Regardless of how many people who play, washer toss is a simple game to set up and play.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a good, flat surface to play washer toss. Short grass is the best surface.

    • 2

Set the two boards 10 feet apart, marking off from the front of the boards for three hole washers. For one hole washers, set the boxes 30 feet apart. Most boards come with a connecting rope or chain to mark the distance.

    • 3

Determine whether you are playing with two people or four people on two teams. If you are playing with two people, both start at the same board. If you are playing with four people, the individuals on the same team stand at opposite boards.

    • 4

Start the game. The first person tosses their three washers. If two people are playing, the other player follows by tossing their three washers. Then, the players move to the other board and repeat. If four people are playing, the opposing teams on the same side both take their turn. Then, the players at the opposite board take their turns. The person who scored last goes first the next round.

    • 5

Mark the points at the end of each round. In three hole washers, a washer that lands in the hole closest to the front of the board is worth one point. A washer in the center hole is worth three points. A washer in the last hole on the board is worth five points. For one hole washers, you get one point if your washer lands in the box and three points if it lands in the pipe in the middle. If players make it in the same hole on the same round, points cancel out.

    • 6

Track the points throughout the game. The first team to reach 21 points and not go over wins. If you exceed 21 points, subtract the number you exceed 21 by from your previous score. For example, if you had 19 and scored five points, you exceeded 21 by three points. You would have to subtract three from your previous score of 19.
