How to Make a Plushy Foam Pit

Foam pits are great fun for kids and adults. Jump in them, do flips into them; the foam helps cushion your fall just like water in a swimming pool. You do not have to go to a carnival to enjoy a foam pit. You can make one yourself with a little work and the proper foam.

Things You'll Need

  • Blocks of low-density foam rubber (amount varies based on size of pit)
  • Foam cutter or scissors
  • Above-ground swimming pool

Instructions

    • 1

Order blocks of low-density foam rubber from an art store or foam supplier. Check the phone book, Thomas.net or Alibaba.com for suppliers. Craft stores also carry sheets of foam. Any low-density foam will do, even the foam used in eggshell mattress pads.

    • 2

Cut the foam into strips and blocks using a pair of scissors or a foam cutter. This machine cuts foam using a hot wire, and it is found at a craft and hobby retailer. Make the strips and blocks at least 1 foot long and several inches wide. It does not matter if the strips are different sizes.

    • 3

Mix the foam strips together and dump them into an above-ground swimming pool. It will take less foam to fill a smaller pool but it will not offer as much cushioning. So take care when jumping into a smaller pool. The deeper your foam, the more cushioning it will provide.
