Mahjong Shanghai Rules

Mahjong is a a four-player game similar to gin rummy, where players chose and discard marked tiles to arrange a winning hand. Shanghai mahjong, also known as Shanghai new rules mahjong, is a derivative of the Hong Kong-style mahjong that incorporates a more complex system of scoring.
  1. The Wining Hand

    • Players produce a winning hand by arranging any combination of 14 tiles that include one pair plus four sets of three identical tiles, three tiles of the same suit in sequential order, or a combination of sets of three identical tiles or three tiles of the same suit in sequential order.

    Three of a Kind: Pung

    • If you have two tiles of the same suit and number, and another player discards a tile of the same suit and number, under Shanghai rules you have the opportunity to select that tile before anyone else by calling out "pung" and selecting the tile. If you fail to call for the tile, you will lose your opportunity to claim the tile.

Three Tiles in Sequential Order: Chi

    • When you have two tiles of the same suit in sequential order (for example a 2 and a 3) and the player to your left discards a tile that you can use (such as a 1 or 4 tile in this example), you can claim that tile instead of selecting another tile from the deck. Under Shanghai rules, you do not have to declare your intent but must select the tile prior to the next player's move.

    Four of a Kind: Kong

    • If you already have three tiles of the same number and suit, and another player discards an identical tile, you can claim that tile by declaring "kong" and selecting the tile. You then choose another tile from the bottom of the deck, rather than the top. According to Shanghai rules, a four of a kind in a winning hand increases the amount each other player pays into the pot by one.

    Winning

    • Under Shanghai rules, if the last tile in your winning hand is another player's discarded tile, the player who discarded the tile must pay the full amount agreed to by all players for a winning hand. If you obtain the last tile in your winning hand from the deck, all players pay the full amount agreed to for a winning hand.
