Instructions
Take a deck of 52 cards and let each player cut it. The one who makes the lowest cut is the designated card dealer.
Pass each card from the deck one by one, in a clockwise direction and face down, to each participating player. For example, if there are four people playing, each will receive thirteen cards total. Any remaining cards are put aside in what's called a "Kitty" and is picked up when a player makes the first "Trick" (person who used the highest card in the suit to win a set of cards).
Have each player pass out three cards to an opponent. The method of passing is determined by the round you are playing. On the first round, each player passes to the right. With the second round, you pass to the left. On the third the cards are passed to the player across from you. Then on the fourth round each player keeps their cards.
Have the person left of the dealer lead with the first card by putting it down on the table, face up. Optionally, you can choose to have the player holding the Two of Clubs go first and put that card down. Take note that you cannot place a Heart card or the Queen of Spades initially.
Put down a card of the same suit on the table. If you cannot match the suit, you can put down any card on your hand.
Find out who has the highest valued card on the table, then have that person collect the cards. The order value of cards goes as follows from lowest to highest: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. If there is a "Kitty" pile, this person picks that up. All claimed cards are set aside to be counted for later.
Let the person who won the previous set lead the next one by putting down the same card suit that was previously played. If no card suit is available in the player's hand, he or she must put down another suit except hearts.
Continue the process outlined in steps five through seven until a player leading the set only has hearts in his hands. When a player puts down the first heart card, this is known as "Broken Hearts" since the current player could not follow the previous suit.
Keep playing until all cards are completed from each person's hand. Then calculate the round's score. Any Heart cards won by a player are counted as one penalty point each. However, if a player received the Queen of Spades then they get an additional thirteen points. For those who get the Jack of Diamonds, ten points are subtracted from the score.
Collect all the cards, and deal them out again for a new round. Keep playing and completing rounds until someone reaches fifty total points. The person who has the least number of penalty points is the winner.
