Jarts Rules

When some people hear of "jarts" or "lawn darts," they often think about oversized darts that are used for an outdoor game. When asked how to play the actual game, some people are not entirely clear on the rules, however. Jarts is a classic outdoor game with concise and easy rules.
  1. Game Setup

    • The plastic circles should be placed on a flat, level area of grass. Space the rings approximately 35 feet apart for best results. Game play begins with each player standing behind his/her respective circle.

    Playing the Game

    • For the initial round, the player who is red begins the game. He/she takes the jart by the handle and tosses it into the opposite ring. To ensure safe play, the jart should be thrown using an underhand technique. It should be tossed high enough to attain plenty of arc so that it will hold upright when landing. Jarts are thrown alternately until one of the players reaches exactly 21 points and wins the game. The winning player begins the next round.

    Scoring

    • A jart that lands inside the circle is worth 3 points. When a jart lands within a jart's length of the circle, it is worth one point. A standard game of jarts has five scoring possibilities:

      - 1 point: Jart is near circle, with no jarts residing in the ring
      - 2 points: Jart lands in circle but opponent has a jart closer to the circle
      - 3 points: Jart lands in circle with no opponent jart near circle OR player has 2 jarts in circle while opponent has a single jart in circle
      - 4 points: Jart is in circle, second jart is nearest circle
      - 6 points: 2 jarts are in the circle, opponent has no jarts in circle

*Note: If the final score for a round takes a player over 21 points, those points must be deducted from the total score. A player has to reach exactly 21 points to be the winner of the game.
